Mother's Day Collage

Recommended Age Group: 3 Years +

Materials Required:

  • Construction Paper
  • Pencil
  • Glue

Instructions:
If you’re looking for a fun craft to use as a gift for a mother or grandmother this year, a construction paper mosaic collage is a great way to allow your child to use her creativity while creating something worthy of framing.

Start by selecting a design for your collage. A heart is an easy design, but older children can get more complicated and spell out messages or make more complex pictures. Lightly sketch the design onto a piece of construction paper. The pencil line is for guidance; it will not show up as part of the final product.

Put the construction paper aside and grab a few pieces of construction paper in the colors you want to work with. Help your child rip off small pieces of paper and sort them according to color. Paper plates are a great way to keep the little pieces separated. When you have a large stack of mosaic pieces torn from the construction paper, you’re ready to begin.

Smear glue onto the design on your construction paper staying roughly inside the line you drew earlier. Then begin laying the torn pieces of paper on top of the glue overlapping each to completely cover the paper underneath. Continue spreading glue and pasting the small tiles until the picture is complete. No paper should be visible underneath.

Once the design is finished, you can fill in the background as well using the same technique. Be sure to cover the pencil lines with paper. The completed mosaic collage will be solid with overlapping pieces with no visible construction paper below.
