Homemade Play-dough
Creating play dough at home is fun and easy. Store brands can be expensive, but creating it at home takes very little time and can be done with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
Recommended Age Group: 1.5 years to 10 years
Materials Required:
- Flour – 1 cup
- Water – 1 cup
- Vegetable Oil – 2 Tablespoons
- Salt – ½ Cup
- Cream of Tartar – 2 Tablespoons
- Food Coloring – 1 Teaspoon
- Mixing Bowl
- Saucepan
- Instructions:
** Creating play dough requires using a hot stove. It is imperative that children have adult supervision or adult assistance for their safety!
In the saucepan, combine flour, salt and cream of tartar. Put the pan on medium heat and as it warms, gradually stir in the water, food coloring and oil. The food coloring is for aesthetics, so choose any color you’d like.
Once all ingredients have been added, stir the mixture over medium heat. You must stir continuously or it will stick to the sides or bottom of the pot and scorch. Be sure to scrape the bottom of the pot as you stir to avoid burning your play dough.
When the contents of the pot resemble a sticky gooey ball, the play dough is done cooking.
Remove the play dough from heat and carefully transfer the ball of sticky dough to the mixing bowl. Put it aside for at least twenty minutes to allow it to cool and solidify a bit more.
Put water in the saucepan or clean it immediately to avoid having to scrub dried play dough residue later.
After the play dough is cool, it is ready for action. Let your child demonstrate his creativity, and when it is time to clean up, store the play dough in plastic bags or let his creations air dry.
