Create a Halloween Pencil Holder
Recommended Age Group: 3 years +
Materials Required:
- Orange and Black Construction Paper
- Glue
- Safety Scissors
- Crayons
- Tape
- Cleaned Tin Can **Be sure there are no sharp edges
Instructions:
All kids have treasures, and what better place to keep them but in a one-of-a-kind pencil holder? This doesn’t just hold pencils, it can hold just about anything.
To create your pencil holder, start by measuring the height of the can along the edge of the orange construction paper. Then roll the can inside the paper to get an idea of how much paper it will take to cover the outside of the can. Finally, cut the resulting rectangle from the orange paper.
Place the orange rectangle on top of the black construction paper. Cut out a matching rectangle from the black paper.
Put the orange paper aside, and fold the black paper in half lengthwise (a hot dog fold.) Using the scissors, cut out designs and shapes along the fold – be careful not to cut the rectangle in half. When you are finished with designs, open the black paper again and your designs should expand and be symmetrical.
Lay the orange paper flat on your work surface. Carefully drip beads of glue onto the paper and then lay the black paper on top. Line up the corners and sides. The orange paper should show through the black paper making unusual Halloween designs.
Allow the glue to dry. Then place glue along the back of the orange paper (where there is no black designs.) Wrap the paper around the can pulling it tight. Glue the ends of the paper together if there is an overlap, and then place a piece of tape over the ends to hold the paper in place while the glue dries.
Finally, when the glue has had a chance to dry, carefully remove the tape and admire your pencil holder. You might even go so far as to buy your child a few special Halloween to break in the new holder.
