Edible Christmas Trees
Recommended Age Group: 2 years +
Materials Required:
- Sugar Ice Cream Cones
- White Icing
- Green Food Coloring
- Spatula
- Small Candies such as M&M, Reese’s Pieces, Gumdrops, Sprinkles
Instructions:
The best kinds of crafts are the ones that can be eaten. Help your child make his very own Christmas tree – and then let him enjoy it as a fun Christmas snack.
To create the edible Christmas tree, take an ice cream cone and turn it upside down so that the point is at the top. In a small bowl, mix white icing with six or seven drops of green food coloring to make green icing. Use the spatula to mix the icing and then to cover the cone so that it is completely green. Use the spatula to also add tufts to the icing to give the tree a more realistic appearance.
Place the tree on a paper plate or napkin before continuing with the decorations as they can get messy. Let your child decorate the tree with the candy and sprinkles. Help her make patterns that could be garlands out of sprinkles and let the baking candies be the ornaments. Use a gumdrop or a larger piece of candy as the tree topper.
When the tree is complete, let your child create one for you, too. Then, grab a glass of hot chocolate, and enjoy your sweet winter treat in front of your real Christmas tree.
The trees are delicious on their own or you can also use the trees on top of a cake to create a winter scene with other colored icing. You can also use the trees to top individual cupcakes for a Christmas themed children’s party.
