Creative Room Posters
Recommended Age Group: 2 years to 15 yearsMaterials Required:
- White Poster board or Large White Drawing Paper
- Pencil
- High Quality Eraser
- Ruler
- Markers
- A Magazine or Printed picture for Inspiration
Instructions:
To create your own room posters, plan your design carefully before beginning. Flip through magazines, comic books, or look at pictures online to get inspiration as to what your poster will contain. Once you have found a picture you like, cut it out or print it.
The options are completely open as to what you can contain. Find a picture you and your child like and study it. Using the ruler, carefully draw a grid of 9-16 squares over the picture. The grid should be roughly even, and will divide the picture into manageable sections.
Using the same ruler and a pencil, lightly divide the poster board into the same number of section. You will be erasing the grid at the end of the project, so be sure it is very light. Each section of the poster board will correspond with a square on the picture.
Use your pencil to very carefully begin transcribing the cut out picture onto the poster board. Draw what is in one square of the cut out into the corresponding square of the poster. Do one square at a time to keep the picture manageable. Use the eraser to correct any mistakes.
Older children will be able to do this on their own with varying degrees of success, but younger children will need a very simple picture to transcribe, and toddlers and pre school age children will need to “help” mom or dad create the picture.
Once the picture is transcribed to the poster board, carefully erase the original grid so that only the new, larger picture remains. Outline the picture or design with a black marker. Use the remaining markers or crayons to color in the outline.
When the poster is completely colored to your satisfaction, help your child proudly hang it in his or her room.
